Evaluation: Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Evaluation: Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

In answering the question of who would be our audience, it is useful to look at how closely our opening film, matches the earlier survey findings .

Given that our findings and secondary findings (correspondence analysis of genre preferences in UK film audiences, see below) more males watch horror films independently of females, are film is more likely to be watched by males independent of a female being present, while females are more likely to watch our film but only in the company of males. Furthermore, males are more likely to watch our film in the company of other males as a shared experience i.e. going as a group to the cinema.

Correspondence analysis of genre preferences in UK film audiences

We decided to also research whats appealing about horror films to know what our audience enjoys the most in a horror film,  the majority of the people asked chose the scary plot as the factor that makes slasher films the most appealing, so we took this into account and made this our main priority for our target audience, to deliver the film as scary as possible.

We also asked how often our audience watches horror slasher films to see how often they enjoy watching horror films. 8 of our audience members watch horror movies once a month, showing how they like to watch horror films every once in a while, maybe because they don't want to get bored of the films, or want to see one very successful horror slasher movie every month.

Secondary Audience:

We also considered a secondary audience, although our target audience are male teenagers, our film could also appeal to a wide variety of audiences, especially young adults of both gender, as 25 +, young adults, are the second group of people that watch horror slasher films the most. Plus the young adults could find our film appealing as they're more mature and understand the consequences of the dangers of being inappropriate.

Film Screening:

In terms of audiences that are more likely to watch our film, there are 2 audiences, the cinema and online cinema audience. In the survey, cinema, Netflix and online where the places that our target audience watch horror slasher films the most, as online screening is becoming  more popular due to it's easy access. Due to our audience being 15 - 19 year olds, they are most likely to be in education, especially college or university, where they have to spend a huge amount of money for school fees, so therefore our audience are more likely to be people that watch online movies.

Another group of audiences that also would find our film appealing, are teenagers that enjoy watching movies in the cinema, as research shows, 50% of our target audience said that cinemas are the place they enjoy watching horror movies the most.

From our research, I have gathered most of them want to look cool whilst watching the film, or to make an experience out of the film to go out and socialise with friends at the cinema, but not many cinemas, as most of our target audience only watch horror movies once a month.

From this audience research I have gathered, that my target audience are teenagers from the ages of 15 - 19 who are mostly male who want thrills from a movie, who enjoy horror movies that have a scary plot, and watch them every month, and enjoy watching them in the cinemas and online with their friends.

Evaluation: Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

The quality of my finished film has improved much more than my preliminary task, the first shots of both of these are establishing shots to establish the location of the scene. In my preliminary task the camera was very shaky and didn't necessarily create tension throughout the opening and set the eerie mood. From this, I have learnt how to create a more effective opening that sets the mood and is necessary for our opening. In my preliminary task, the establishing shot didn't look interesting and appeared as plain. In our finished production, we deliberately shook the camera in order to create a distorted feel to the movie, to forebode a great evil. The preliminary task opening also looks boring and will not appeal to my target audience due to this issue, We took this into consideration, and added an element that would grab my target audiences attention. We used an effect that would add to the scary theme of the film, as it was dark and created suspense and the audience couldn't make out where the area was as it was distorted.

Our over the shoulder shot was also much more stable and effective, as we could see what the character is doing, however in the preliminary task shot, the use of the over the shoulder shot wasn't effective and didn't show anything.

We also learnt about different camera shots, angles and movements and bettered our understanding of the equipment in general. We didn't use basic shots like medium close ups, but instead we used more complex shots that are more effective, for example this crane shot that made the character like vulnerable and victim like as the camera came from above, and looked like it was cowering over the character.

Improvements
  • Worked with a script
  • Calculated our shots and took practice shots until we got the shots perfect in our final film, our prelim task helped us do this, as we didn't calculate the shots properly there, so we took this into consideration while doing our main task.
  • Arranged our cast and crew
  • Varied the use of shots, angles and movements

Understanding DSLR:

We read the manual before using the camera in order to completely understand the camera, however in the preliminary task, we didn't really know how to use the camera. We read the manual in order to know how to zoom in, as in our preliminary task, we couldn't adjust the camera to zoom in, therefore limiting the variety of shots we could use. Every time we referred to the manual in the main task, we learnt something new. We also learnt about the lighting and scene, which we used in order to create a high quality final film, we didn't use this at all in the prelim task, and only used the default settings as we didn't know about the other settings.
