Evaluation: Question 5
How did you attract/address your target audience?
We met all of the needs of our target audience, as it attracted them due to our opening having a scary plot and relating to our target audience, this is shown in our interviews with our target audience below. This is evident due to our target audience research, in which our target audience specifically enjoy horror films with a scary plot, and one that follows horror conventions. I interviewed 3 teenagers, 2 male teenagers and 1 female who where from the ages of 16 - 17, that enjoy the concept of scary slasher films, they also fit the description of my target audience, who are mainstream teenagers that want to have a good time, this is shown in my audience profile (located below) , therefore I asked them how my opening sequence attracted them, and it mirrored all the things said in my target audience research.
Questions asked:
What was the most appealing about our opening sequence?
What attracted you the most about our opening sequence?
What do you think about our use of props?
What do you think about our location settings?
What do you think about our storyline?
I also asked one male member of my secondary target audience who is 26, as our film also appeals to a wide variety of audiences, especially 25 + young adults, as they are the second group of people that watch horror slasher films the most. Plus the young adults could find our film appealing as they're more mature and understand the consequences of the dangers of being inappropriate, however they still enjoy the concept of our film and relate to it, making it attractive towards them also.

Evaluation : Question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Titling

Our titles is stereotypical of a slasher title as it contains colours like red and black which connote darkness, death and blood. I have analysed other titles and they look very similar to our one, as we took ideas of those, for inspiration. The title is also in bold to grab the audiences attention. The title itself is 'Bird Call' which is significant, as our jump scare in our movie, is the sound of the bird which surprises our audience and actor.

These are titles that have inspired ours, they follow the conventions of a horror movie as the colour scheme is red and black, which is the same as ours. Our title also has a puddle of blood in the middle of the titling to forebode death. This is also a new element and challenges the conventional horror film titling, as the examples I have studied, don't include this, and tend to stick to simple titling with black, red, white colours, as I have seen this as a pattern through out horror slasher films. We also have white in our title, which Insidious 3 also has, which contrasts against the black, making the letters stand out, same as our one, as the white stands out against the black, and red in the blood.

Editing
Based on research, the conventional editing style consist of non continuity editing where the construction is more apparent and we see a meaning behind why the editing style is like that.
There are also jump cuts, match cuts, reverse shots and cutting rhythm, to emphasis the disruption of the situate and fear.
We followed the conventions of this and used many similar cuts to add effect to our film, using inspiration from 'The House At The End Of The Street' in which there's various use of these cuts, especially reverse shots and jump cuts, to create a fast pace, to build up tension and suspense between the audience and the film.
Jump Cuts
In this opening, we see a medium close up of the girls feet, as it quickly jumps to a different location, also in dark setting to also create tension and suspense. This adds to the fear of the girls presence, and without the fast pace jump cuts, the film wouldn't be as scary, as jump cuts heighten the fear of the scene as it gives the audience horror due to what the camera movement is showing.
In our film we also use jump cuts to emphasise the suspense, and this appeals to the audience as they would want to know what will happen next due to the quick jump cuts. A jump cut is key when making a horror film as it almost forces the audience to interact with the film, due to the sudden and immediate interaction with with gory images, giving it a 'shock' factor, that surprises the audience as they weren't expecting it, jump cuts are used in attempt to scare the audience.
Reverse Shots
The use of reverse shots are used to also create tension and involve the audience as it gives a sense of realism, as the audience can interact with the scene by seeing it in two peoples views. It's often used to see the world through the killers eyes, also creating suspense.

Genre
By using the non-diegetic sound of the radio commentary the narrative is again reinforced and backed up. A radio commentary is commonly used in this genre as it seems factual which again makes the audience believe what is shown to them. For example in films such as Scream and Friday The 13th news reports are used to show significant deaths that have occurred in the film. Narrative is again reinforced and backed up. The Purge
The music in this opening sequence is what makes it unique and stand out to an audience due to the contrapuntal music. The music does not fit with what is happening on screen. This contrast between classical, relaxing music and the violent murderous of the CCTV footage, creating an unsettling mood for the audience and conveys the horror genre.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
We used this soundtrack because it was already successful before hand as it was in a very popular slasher film,'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' giving us re assurance, that its a well established soundtrack, and people could recognise it. The use of the radio news adds a realness to the movie and the audience could believe that it was them in the movie, making the horror aspect more believable. We also used this soundtrack due to the disturbing noises in the background of the radio commentary, giving the opening a more fearing aspect, as we want to know what those noises are and what they could forebode.
